Behind The Bar - New Candide

The BBC's brilliant SECRET ARMY dramatised the lives of the brave men and women who ran the resistance evasion lines, which assisted Allied aircrews to escape from German occupied countries into neutral countries like Spain or Switzerland, during the Second World War

I've been wondering for some time now; so here's a post which I hope will find the answer. Does anyone know / can anyone help. On the wall behind the bar of the new candide, there is a poster for what looks like a liqueur; a red liqueur, in a cocktail glass, with the title "balsam". I would love to be able to find a bottle. Is it still around, or was it a wartime thing?

Not sure if this is the right site to answer you query but I used a search engine here in the library and was denied access to it.

Please feel free to click on the link, have a look around and see if this site has the drink to which you mentioned.

Hope it helps.

It is a poster for 'Balsam aperitif' a drink produced by F.X. de Beukelaer. I contacted the company which is still going strong, about 18 months ago in an attempt to source an original of the poster to go on the back of my Secret Army 2 DVD booklet but they couldn't find it in their archive.

Balsam aperitif dates back to 1863 and is made on a base of orange juice and infusions of various rinds and herbs, including quinine. They still make it today.

Visit their website here: <a href='http://www.fx-debeukelaer.be/' target='_blank'>http://www.fx-debeukelaer.be/</a>

best wishes,

Just thought I'd pass on the news - I got my bottle of Balsam aperitiff recently and it tastes quite nice, a bit like ginger wine actually. It cost 7 euros , with 12 euros postage! It really does add something to be watching series two or three with a glass of this in hand.
