'classic Series' Doctor Who DVD Releases

Classic Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction television series in the history of broadcasting, a series that began on the BBC1 network in the United Kingdom in November 1963 and ran until 1989. Whilst UK viewers warmed to the subsequent 1996 TV movie ratings were not similiarly strong in America and this co-production sadly spelled eighth incarnation Paul McGann's only appearance to date.

I think 'Revelation of the Daleks' makes an excellently timed 'classic series' release following on from the end of the 2005 series. The new CGI effects are marvellous especially the Davros attaching Orcini scene towards the end of the story.

However I'm still a little puzzled about the choice of the Hartnell story 'The Web Planet' as the next release in September 2005. Surely there must be better stories to chose from to fill the slot. If not from the Hartnell era then elsewhere in the 'classic series' run.

Anyone out there agree from me on this?

I know what you're saying Sarah-luckily for me I love all the Hartnell adventures, but I can see people avoiding TWP like the plague.

I would have picked The Keys of Marinus if I could have my say-I think that's a story with bags of appeal.

Otherwise, it's the usual suspects, The Terror of the Autons, The Daemons (regardless of status) and The Masque of Mandragora.

Cheers for that Reinhardt!

Yeah, 'Keys of Marinus' would be great but maybe 'The Chase' or 'The War Machines' might be better DVD choices.

When you are talking 'classic series' story release choices then you are really only talking about (with greatest respect to other 'Doctors') Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.

Jon Pertwee titles I'd like to see would be either 'The Sea Devils' or 'Inferno'

Tom Baker titles I'd like to see would be either 'Masque of Mandragora' or 'Image of the Fendahl'

Yeah, 'The Daemons' would be an excellent choice for a DVD release but let us hope that the extras feature the 55min independently produced feature 'Return To Devils End' where cast (Jon Pertwee, John Levene, Richard Franklin and Nicholas Courtney) and crew (Director Morris Barry) return to the location used in this classic Pertwee story. A fitting tribute as sadly Jon and Morris are no longer with us.

Thanks Sarah.

I'd love to see 'The War Machines' on dvd-I enjoy it on many levels-especially the way Polly and Ben are introduced. 'The Chase' is a big problem, what with the clip of The Beatles (and Ian's dancing ) being a pricey item to clear.

I too feel Pertwee and Baker stand for Classic stories, but then again, there are some very good Mc Coy stories out there too-and I myself admit I didn't give him much of a chance. Even the much picked upon 'Silver Nemisis' has some nice touches-and I think it would make a great dvd.

Agree about 'Return to Devil's End', it's great fun, and packed with nostaligia.

Yeah I absolutely agree with what you are saying, there are indeed some great McCoy stories yet to see 'DVD light of day'. Personally I absolutely love to bits 'Battlefield' (as you can see from my review - http://www.gallifreyone.com/review.php?id=7n) Also 'Greatest Show In The Galaxy' could certainly be worthy of classic status.

Rather difficult to agree with you on 'Silver Nemesis'

'Doctor, I dig your fab gear', a marvellous Polly quote directed towards the Doctor in the Inferno club in 'The War Games'. Personally I'd consider 'The Chase' as probably the best Hartnell story because of so many changeable locations, introduction of Steven (Peter Purves) and of course the Mechanoids.

You don't like Silver Nemesis then? lol-I'm beginning to think I'm the only one that does!

Oh yes, that's a brilliant line from The War Machines-great fun.

Yes, The Chase is great-I love all the things it takes on-from Haunted Houses to The Marie (Mary) Celeste-rip-roaring fun.

Can't wait for City of Death either-one of my strongest memories is off seeing The Doctor and Romana run through Paris.

Yeah 'City' will be so cool, I am led to believe that Tom Baker will be one of those participating in the commentary, and it's not too often that he joins in!

Looking ahead what other Tom Baker/Jon Pertwee stories would you like to see (aside from The Daemons and that old chestnut 'Genesis of the Daleks')

Personally I think it is a stone cold certainty that with the news 2006 series in full flow that 'Attack of the Cybermen' will be a DVD release, Colin Baker has already participated in commentary for it.

Hmmm-Attack of the Cybermen...not too sure about what I make of that one. Attack is one of those stories with some really great bits, but also some really, really bad bits-and personally, the music throughout it drives me mad

In the Pertwee era, I'd like to see both Frontier in Space and The Planet of the Daleks hit dvd, although my beloved Mind of Evil would be my first choice-sadly, it being only available in black and white, it seems highly unlikely to get a release soon. Another one I'd like to see is the much mocked Time Monster-it would be nice to see another Master story soon.

As for Tom Baker, if I could have my christmas and birthday come at once, I'd have the E-Space trilogy. Warrior's Gate and State of Decay still make me feel like an eight year old Second choice, but pretty close behind, would be The Keeper of Traken and Logopolis-with Peter Davison's Castrovalva shortly after.

I suppose the trouble with Doctor Who is, there's so many too choose from, and no matter what is released, I'm always ready for the next one, before I have the cellophane off the current one. Financially, the releases suit me as they are, but I suppose season by season would have been best.

I just hope the Beeb in her wisdom doesn't hit us with something like Planet of Fire or The Gunfighters, I don't think I could take a slow down in the classics being released.

Yeah I agree pretty much with your 'Pertwee' choices. I am a big fan of 'The Time Monster' with the Master trying to hid from UNIT as a scientist, great lines like 'Simmer down Stew', ultra speedy Bessie' and the trip to Atlantis at the end of the story.

Your wishes could be granted regarding 'Keeper of Traken' as a commentary track has been recorded featuring Anthony Ainley.

My view regarding DVD releases is 'Quality rather than quantity' in that I totally believe that five releases evenly spread out throughout the year is the best course of action. That way each extras packed story that is released can have its moment in the spotlight.

Sorry I have to disagree with your thoughts about 'Planet of Fire' as here is another story that I absolutely love, hence another detailed review at 'Outpost Gallifrey'. Although I'm not as fired up about it I don't think 'The Gunfighters' is quite as bad as people make out.

Just out of interest I would have to say that the story that I absolutely hate is the Peter Davison four parter 'Terminus', rather dull slow plodder and not a good exit for Nyssa.

Nice reviews.

I think as far as Planet of Fire is concerned, it was one of those stories I missed on the original transmission, and I had built it up, probably too much, for myself. It does have some amazing moments-I have to agree-probably I'm just a little let down with the natives-if that's the right word.

The Gunfighters isn't anything like as bad as people make out-that's very true, but it's just my least favourite Hartnell-and I'd hate to see it released before some of the others.

I agree about Terminus-another story that looks good on paper, but suffers on screen. Shame, because I do like the costumes, Eirak etc. It all feels padded in the early episodes, then rushed towards the end.

Still, I suppose, deep down, I would welcome any release on dvd-I can't say I hate any of the series from '63-'89, not one story really gets my back up. I suppose I'm too soft!

I think the first story that I can remember seeing on its original transmission would have to be Jon Pertwee?s swan song, the six-part epic ?Planet of the Spiders? in 1974. I loved (and still enjoy) the crackling energy bursts used by the possessed people, the electronically treated vocals of ?the eight legs?, Pertwee visiting ?the great one? towards the end of the tale and the entertaining albeit superfluous long winded chase sequence with a multitude of vehicles being used. All that mysticism of Cho-Je and K?Anpo is entertaining as is the sudden evolution of simple-minded Tommy during the story. Add into the memorable mix the scheming Lupton and the return of former series regular Mike Yates, trying to get his mind together after his misguided betrayal of his friends in ?Invasion of the Dinosaurs?. It?s a good story for series regulars Elizabeth Sladen (her ?possessed by the Queen? performance towards the end still sticks in my mind) and Jon Pertwee who retains his distinct level of style that so distinguished his era. Watching it nowadays I feel that some of the polish has gone from it however I feel there is still much to enjoy here and for me it seems likely as having the most satisfying regeneration scene the series has produced. Whether it would stand up to a more polished extras packed DVD release is debatable though.

As a side note I would like to mention that I was actually born on the day that the forth and final episode of the Patrick Troughton story ?The Macra Terror? was broadcast. Strangely I didn?t get to see it, I wonder why???

Ahh! funnily enough, I feel it's Planet of the Spiders that I remember-it's the only one with, as you say, the array of vehicles, that seem to fit my memory.

Sadly, I have no claim to a Who story for my birthday-I was born in November, before The Three Doctors, and well after the previous story The Time Monster-bah!

Actually, to return to the subject of dvds of the classic series, your comments have convinced me that Planet of the Spiders would make a brilliant dvd.

Reasons why 'The Chase' would be a far better DVD release choice than 'The Web Planet'

Aside from the Daleks, you have Ian's amusing dancing early on, did you spot Hwyel Bennett as a reptile man?, love the Mechanoids and their city towards the end. How could anyone truely be convinced by the Daleks android copy of the Doctor?. I think this is the only story in the entire (63-89) run where an actor plays two parts during the adventure. During the exciting 'switching of locations' we have the TARDIS landing on the Empire State Building where Peter Purves first appears as laughing and joking Morton Dill, a 'whacked out' Texan who can't grasp the seriousness of the situation. Later on Peter Purves appears, dirty and disheveled as the unshaven prisoner of the Mechanoids, Steven Taylor. I loved the 'spooky' nature of the Mechanoid planet's forest. Great fun also is the 'fun house' sequence with Dracula, Frankenstein et all. ...and of course there is the possible reason for the Marie Celeste, did the Daleks really cause it.

Basically, you might have guessed I rather love this first Doctor story.
