Doctor Who - The 2006 Season

The franchise was successfully relaunched in late March 2005 with ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston taking viewers and new companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) on a 13 week journey of adventure and excitement. Christmas of 2005 found the Time Lord recovering from his latest transformation into a more personable, less angst ridden tenth persona played by David Tennant. Over four years featuring three full seasons and seven specials David helped further consolidate and strengthen the series success before eventually handing over the coverted role to his successor, relative unknown Matt Smith on New Years Day 2010.

Personally I'm not at all sure about this new look

Someone on the 'Human League - Secrets' forum compared him to looking like 'Jarvis Cocker' (the 'Pulp' pop group lead singer).

My first thought was 'that suit needs a good clear and iron' and 'he looks like some wineo/tramp now'. Maybe I'm being a bit cruel to pass such a 'knee jerk' judgement and 'the look' might win me over in time.

However after Eccleston's 'leather jacket', angst ridden portrayal I wonder where the makers are now taking the Doctor. Maybe after the 'Dalek War' (Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways') this Doctor may lighten up a bit?

Time will tell................

Hmmmm, no, I agree with you. I, personally, was hoping for a look closer to what Paul McGann had, maybe not quite as extreme, but a bit more class wouldn't go a miss.
I never did like Eccleston's look, and had hoped we'd see a departure from the man (or tramp) in the street look.

Still, you never know, this may just be for the Christmas special, afterwords, he might get a full giro...

Yes I agree with you. I thought McGann's costume was very stylish, really cool and precisely right for the setting of the TV Movie. Aside from the awful plot McGann was, I thought, brilliant in that. Any thoughts on this big budget one off?

Yes, they should have tried with Tennant to get close to that ultra cool look.

Aside from the questionable 'question mark' pullover, I thought McCoy effectively nailed the character particularly in his final year re-establishing the mystery of the character.

Yeah well I feel I can't 'sit on the fence' any longer about this with all the rumours and stories associated with the upcoming tenth Doctor stories flying around.

I thought it worth starting off a forum regarding the 2006 season which incorporates both the 2005 Christmas special and next years 13 episode run.

First off, delighted to hear the Penelope Wilton is returning as Harriet Jones MP (now PM) for Flydale North in 'The Christmas Invasion' whenever it is going to be shown in December.

Also delighted that Pauline Collins is coming back to the Doctor Who fold in the second episode currently titled 'Tooth and Claw' as Queen Victoria. I still have fond memories of her Samantha Briggs character in the Patrick Troughton 'Faceless Ones' story.

Mixed feelings about Elisabeth Sladen and John Leeson coming back in the third episode 'School Reunion' as Sarah Jane Smith and K9. Yeah I guess Sarah Jane was alright as a companion however I don't think the introduction of K9, back in the 70s story 'The Invisible Enemy' was particularly good and he never really endeared himself to me.

Love the prospect of a French period piece in the fourth episode 'The Girl in the Fireplace'

Naturally the biggest drawn for the first full season of the tenth Doctor will be the return of the Cybermen, and yes I am a very big fan!

First rumour is that they will appear in the fifth/sixth episode two parter

Second rumour and something that I only heard in the national press yesterday was that they will also be returning for the two part season finale and, get this, they will come face to face with the Daleks in the same story.

Don't know if all this is true and if it is I'm sure there will be some divided loyalties amongst viewers. Personally I'd be rooting for the Cybermen, I've always considered them better than the Daleks. To support my arguement I recommend anyone not to be deeply disturbed after listening to the Big Finish 'Spare Parts', origins of the Cybermen story which has the 5th Doc and Nyssa visiting Mondas at the creation of the Cyber race.

Anyway subjects open and over to you guys!

So then did we all enjoy David Tennant's debut story in 'The Christmas Invasion'?

On balance I thought it was good entertainment even though the 10th Doctor spent most of the story in bed.

Anyone else got any thoughts about this story???

I thought the story was ok but far too cheesy in places. I thought they were really pushing it to the edge with the cringe worthy dialogue and character situations - if they are not careful this series will end up being as stupid as the Sylvester McCoy seasons! Just my opinion.

Aside from this though I really do think David Tennant did a really good job and I think I'm going to like him more than I did Christopher Eccleston. I'm looking forward to seeing both the Cybermen and K-9!

Now if only they could get the Blakes-7 re-imaginging off the ground!!

Ouch , regarding your comment about Sylvester McCoy, I personally thought there was a few good moments during his three years (e.g. 'The Curse of Fenric' is generally held in high regard (judging by the lavish DVD release treatment) and I personally absolutely looooove 'Battlefield')

Yeah I guess 'The Christmas Invasion' was a bit cheesy in places but I guess that is rather typical for any 'christmas special' story and is typical or RTD's writing style.

I agree having the Cybermen back next year in (possibly) four episodes of the new 2006 run will be great however personally, I'm not entirely sold on the idea of K9 returning considering what a problem he was for the production team towards the end of Tom Baker's tenure (e.g. filming on Blackpool beach for 'The Leisure Hive')

well guys I'm going to stick my neck out here and predict that the new second season of Doctor Who starring David Tennant will have a similiar broadcast run as that which Christopher Eccleston had during 2005. With that in mind I've flagged up basic details in the calendar section from Saturday 25th March 2006 when I predict it will be beginning its broadcast run. Details are of course sourced from Outpost Gallifrey

Just heard today that you will be able to have your very own David Tennant 10th Doctor figure either with coat or without.

There are other figures in the collection (currently scheduled for a Feburary 2006 release) but seeing these two just had me firstly falling about laughing ( Very Happy Very Happy )and then thinking that they are indeed rather quite realistic and accurate.

Anyway worth keeping an eye on this site for further details...

Well guys I think it is pretty likely that the new second season of Doctor Who with David Tennant will not begin showing on 25th March. Current issue of DWM says that they'll be having new story previews from the next issue, on sale 30th March so possibly we are looking for a starting date of, potentially 1st April. Calendar entries have been altered accordingly.

Will it be any good? Well we've got Sarah Jane, K9, Cat People and the Cybermen (twice) so might be worth watching, I guess!

So David and Billie are now back on BBC1, returning with 'New Earth' on 15th April...

Yeah it did indeed look impressive, the opening shot with our duo stepping out of the TARDIS on a windswept cliff top with a good CGI matted in shot of a futuristic city. The hospital's exterior was well rendered as, I guess was the interior, especially the green glowing chambers where 'patients' are stored.

...however for some reason I was not overly impressed with this season opener, maybe it was merely 'gloss over substance' and also that on that Saturday I had just been watching the 'Star Trek : First Contact' movie immediately before it began. The bit where the disease ridden patients walk to infect people rather echoed the Borg's attempts to assimiliate Picard's crew, not very original then!

I will admit that both David and Billie were on top form Smile especially rising to the acting challenges of the 'possessed' segments of the story although I rather cringed when the Doctor used the decontamination system in the lift to cure the patients and said 'I am the Doctor and I've cured them/you'

All in all a rather luke warm start <_< but, oh my god, look at what is coming up next week!!!

Out in the Scottish highlands, with vampires, Queen Victoria and red attired karate monks... beware, 'Tooth and Claw' is coming Surprised
