Initial thoughts about Kessler DVD

KESSLER was first transmitted between 13 November and 18 December 1981 and saw Clifford Rose reprise the role of Ludwig Kessler. The series also starred Alan Dobie (War and Peace, Cribb) as Richard Bauer, Nitza Saul (Doctor Who - Warriors of the Deep, Star Cops) as Mical Rak, Alison Glennie (Blake's 7 - Power) as Ingrid Dorf, Nicholas Young (The Tomorrow People) as Franz, Guy Rolfe (Secret Army) as Yqueras, Oscar Quitak (A Very British Coup) as Josef and Ralph Michael (Empire of the Sun) as Ruckert.

Just got my hands on a copy of the ?KESSLER? DVD set and wanted to share some initial thoughts about this product. I really loved the glossy, slightly classy, dark themed feel slipcover packaging that not only presents the series so effectively but is now so typical of DD Home Entertainment?s high quality Cult TV series releases. Andy (Priestner) has indeed rendered his usual sterling job in preparing a commendably informative and insightful ?Viewing Notes? booklet, the perfect companion to the series. I loved the two photo galleries, one with BBC stills from the series (54 images) and the other, more intriguingly presents shots from the Dorf Family Photo Album (63 images).

Like other ?Secret Army? fans I am absolutely delighted to finally get to see all six parts of this 1981 follow-up series however, dare I say it, there are a few aspects I?m a little disappointed about.

First up it?s a shame that we don?t have, like the ?Secret Army? releases, a looped run of the title sequence set behind the menu options although at least we have the looped theme tune. However this series hardly has the most distinctive or memorable titles. I guess if you have bought other DD Home Entertainment releases you kind of get used to some kind of looped moving sequence. However the biggest thing that baffled me straight away was the episode split taking up three instead of the expected two discs. The only equivalent releases I can think of are ?Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)? and ?A Very Peculiar Practice? both of which have roughly the same amount of episodes and make do with only two discs plus extras. Absolutely delighted to all contributors and Andy?s involvement in the ?Kessler Uncovered? documentary although I was rather puzzled that there were no possible chapter points in such a lengthy program.

However, these are minor points and I have to say (as with other fans) I am absolutely delighted to add this to my collection and offer up my thanks for all the hard work from Andy and DD Home Entertainment have done in bringing this release out.
