Fall of Eagles is the BBC's stunning 1974 dramatisation of the declining years and final collapse of three of the most powerful European dynasties ? the Hapsburgs, Romanovs and Hohenzollerns ? between the mid-19th century and the end of the First World War.

Jan Francis appearance in Fall of Eagles

Postby Sarah Tarrant on Mon Mar 26, 2007 8:35 am

Regarding your enquiry regarding Jan Francis appearing in ?Fall of Eagles?. Ms Francis appears in Episode Five, entitled ?The Last Tsar? where she plays Mathilde Ksehessinska, a premiere danseuse of the Imperial Russian Ballet. We first see her elegantly dancing on her own in a pale blue ballerina dress to Tchaikovsy?s ?Sleeping Beauty? on a spotlight lit stage before an assembled appreciative audience that includes perched high in a royal balcony box Tsarevitch Nicholas. The young man watches with keen enchanted enthusiasm, eager to meet the performer whom has so captured his heart. A few scenes later we find Nicholas and Mathilde in bed together for a fairly lengthy, relatively relaxed scene where the future Tsar conveys his thoughts and apprehensions about the future and that tradition demands that he should wed a respectable well connected lady to which Mathilde retorts angrily about his inference about her cultural standing. Again a few more scenes later we return to these characters and have the military uniform attired Nicholas visiting Mathilde (whom wears a beautifully delicate dress, however IMO she has far too much mascara on (you can see a thick smudge line under her right eye)) with the objective of ending their relationship together. In total I reckon their scenes together amount to about eight minutes of the entire fifty-one and a half minute episode. Jan Francis contributes a believable and worthy rendering of the Russian ballerina whom so briefly bewitched and enchanted Tsarevitch Nicholas although the future ruler of Russia would never be able to pursue the relationship.

hope this clarifies things for you
