PART FIVE

Undoubtedly the highlight of ?PART FIVE? concerns Kessler?s meeting with Martin Bormann at an isolated ?dilapidated cortijo? used by Mengele which is situated deep in the Alazar countryside. Following some pleasant horseback riding tracking shots, embellished by appropriate incidental music, Bauer and Mical take up position in a secluded spot above the seemingly disused buildings where they observe developments as they happen (Bauer with a camera, Mical with a snipers rifle). This is indeed an exciting sequence which is initiated by Bauer who, on attempting to get closer, falls into a covered mineshaft, thereby alerting the emerging figures of Kessler and Mengele, who both somehow manage to escape unhurt although both clearly shaken. Whilst Kessler (who subsequently visits Ingrid) is clearly traumatised from his potentially life threatening experience handles the incident better it is, unsurprisingly Mengele (from what we know of his ?hunted? existence) whom expresses more emotion about what has just transpired. Back at the Kameradenwerk headquarters he comes over the radio in an extremely distressed and slightly incoherent state, fervently imploring Colonel Ruckert that something must be done immediately about the potential Israeli threat he believes is currently prevalent in Asuncion.

Now to avoid the interest of the police in their actions, Bauer and Mical move to stay with Jose Garriga in his flat where we have the trio of character engaging in an interesting and significant discussion regarding war criminals. Bauer begins by enquiring why Jose?s country does not just kick them out. He counters by saying that they bring money and new trade with countries in Europe which are both good for Paraguay and concludes by saying ?Senor, what happens in Europe is no concern of ours and what happens here is no concern of yours.? Clearly not satisfied with his explanation Bauer hits back with ?These are criminals, men wanted for the deaths of thousands of human beings. You can?t aid them without incurring the condemnation of the world.? This rather seems rather rich from Mical?s point of view who retorts, from the kitchen (where she is preparing coffee) ?We can also level that argument at you, Richard. What is Germany doing about putting its own house in order?? Bauer replies ?Whatever we can, but it?s little enough, I agree.? Entering the living room Mical hits back to this rather weak retort by saying ?Because Germany does nothing, we Israelis have to. Why didn?t you do something immediately after Nuremberg, when everything was geared for it?? Well the head strong young lady has rather left herself open to attack with those words and Bauer easily comes back with the convincingly worded ?For God?s sake, girl! You?ve no idea what it was like. Germany was in ruins. Every mark went into building houses, factories, anything to make us viable as a nation. You expect us to have spent time and money chasing criminals round the world? We were more concerned with building schools and hospitals. Let?s get our priorities right.? Clearly not ready to back down Mical snaps back ?I don?t think quite like that? to which Bauer equally tersely replies ?No, you Israelis don?t. Understandably, perhaps, but Jerusalem is not the centre of the universe, and please understand, I don?t feel guilty any more. Young Germany, of course, never has felt any guilt.?, which thereby concludes the exchange.

PART FIVE is also notable for Kessler, on returning to an empty Kameradenwerk headquarters later that day enters the room where, in the previous part, he had faced his initial interrogation on his arrival. Now, in the darkened, silent area he gazes up at the pictures of the Furher, Nazi flags and the assembled memorabilia stored in a nearby cupboard and takes a moment to reflect back to those days long ago. Personally it felt almost surreal seeing the black and white scene of a young uniformed Kessler standing in the middle of the impressively elaborate Octagon Room where he is welcomed into the SS by a senior officer. Although we see Kessler as a young boy (listening to his mother playing the piano) his thoughts are always towards serving his country as the youngster, distracted by noise from the street outside, turns towards the military band playing outside leading into further archival news footage

Aside from these two key aspects to ?PART FIVE? it is also worth mentioning the resolute stance that Ingrid continues to bring to the overall story, in representing the new movements pursuit of funds from her father. Whilst patiently waiting for his disillusionment with the Kameradenwerk to reach its conclusion she continues to seek out new allies to her cause and succeeds in winning over Yqueras. So overall this is indeed an extremely enjoyable episode of ?Kessler? with many strong aspects in its favour, setting things up brilliantly for the dramatic final part?
