PART THREE

Postby Sarah Tarrant on Tue Nov 15, 2005 12:35 pm

?PART THREE? opens to find that miraculously Mical has, for the second time, survived an assassination attempt at the hands of Kessler and his ?Kameradenwerk associates? and is subsequently brought to Bauer?s London address ?for safe keeping? by MI6 agent Gidney thereby forging the investigative link between the two of the main series characters. It is whilst she is staying there that Bauer crucially indicates why pursuit of suspected high ranking Nazi war criminals remains so important. As he indicates ?to be effective a movement like National Socialism needs a political base, an organisation, a party. A propaganda machine, all the trimmings, in fact, however this is not possible without big money. Big enough to buy people, to fight openly in elections as Hitler once did. The Kameradenwerk have this big money. Some is with the old guard who escaped to South America. Some is still in Europe. But together it?s a vast sum. Now if this man Dorf is Kessler, he could lead us to it. If ?the Fortune?, as they call it, could be somehow destroyed, then the chances of a serious revival of Nazism would be over.? Undoubtedly a convincing argument which succeeds in winning over Mical. Further to her suggestion about Kessler?s wife Madeline, Bauer asks Leider to check over Dorf?s country residence back in Germany however when he arrives at the gate and gains the ?will you please leave your car at the main gate and walk up to the house? reply from the intercom, you just know that the outlook will not look good for him, which indeed, subsequent to his leaving, is the case. However before this occurs he makes the significant discovery of Dorf?s family album, the photographic film he shoots of the contents he manages to post back to Bauer. Of course Colonel Rucert quickly has the album destroyed (much to the initial consternation and distress of Kessler (it was after all the last photographic connection he had with his deceased wife) but the damage is now done resulting in another hasty departure out of the country for Kessler and his staff. Now with the main scenes of this part so focused in London Bauer deals heavily with MI6 and both Jeremy Wilkin (as Gidney) and Harold Innocent (as Deakin) continue to portray their suitably dour secret service characters reasonably convincingly. Also worth mentioning is talk of the events of Secret Army?s final episode (?The Execution?) centering on Major Spitzwerg?s participation in the prison execution of one of the other prisoners which crops up in conversation between the MI6 men and Bauer. Other than the points I have mentioned I personally found ?PART THREE? a fairly routine segment which adequately advances the story without being particularly memorable.
