Well right from the start ?PART FOUR? provides a distinct culture shock as the cosy confines of Germany, Belgium and London are discarded in favour of the arid desert region of Asuncion in Paraguay. Although it is undoubtedly a hot, dry and underdeveloped location there are some pleasant enough street scenes in and around town, particularly those featuring Frans and Ingrid walking amongst the locals. Now although I feel genuinely positive about the sudden change of location I personally felt that some of the incidental music was rather overpowering and inappropriate (e.g. market place scenes and horseback riding). Once you get over the rather disorientating new locale this instalment of ?Kessler? has a lot going for it in plot development, character performances and interaction and dare I say it a touch of humour (primarily centering on Mical?s scenes with hostel owner Jose Garriga although Bauer in cowboy clothes and hat certainly raised a laugh with me) added to the mix. For Kessler and Hans Ruckert they travel to the main Kameradenwerk headquarters, a group of white coloured buildings located deep in the countryside which I thought was certainly an impressive location and highly in keeping with the secret nature of the organisation. As part of their security procedures, Kessler is interrogated by a panel of senior group members in a large room adorned with Nazi flags and paintings. He takes his seat in front of the four figures seated behind a large desk and, noting the one empty chair enquires as to whom will be heading the inquiry. Clearly incensed to learn that it is a Doctor Josef Mengele he asks with some disbelief ?I am to be questioned by that sadistic mountebank?? which clearly indicates some knowledge. We first see Mengele walk down the corridor and into the room with a slightly haunted, rather unsettling approach and his first words are indeed softly spoken which further indicates the probable mental state of this individual. This is further indicated in the private conversation that he and Kessler have later on in Kessler?s room which indeed becomes quite heated on occasion. Oscar Quitak gives an entirely convincing and emotional performance as the notorious ?Angel of Death of Auschwitz? regarding the hunted existence he has endured for the past thirty years. Now PART FOUR is notable for the return of actor Guy Rolfe who ?Secret Army? fans might recall from the Season Two, Episode two story where he played Oberst von Elmendorff in a restaurant Candide scene talking with Braint. Well in ?Kessler? he brings to the role of Don Yqueras the same distinguished portrayal that distinguished his Secret Army cameo appearance. Returning to our main investigative duo and Bauer and Mical take to horseback so as to seruptiously approach the main Kameradenwek headquarters via the surrounding mountains so as to approach unnoticed by the residents. Now as we know Nitz Saul who plays Mical Rak featured in Star Cops six years after this series. Well PART FOUR also provides us with another guest star from that series in the form of Richard Lees who appeared as Asian businessman Richard Hoe in that series sixth episode, John Collee?s ?In Warm Blood? story. In ?Kessler? his role is that of Brazilian gangster Antonio Dias who, along with others meets Ingrid in a local bar to talk about the Nazi fund transfers current occurring. In summary, all things considered ?PART FOUR?
