Star Trek TOS to get CGI Makeover for 40th Anniversary!

Postby Chris Herbert on Thu Aug 31, 2006 2:57 pm

Star Trek purists, take a deep breath! On Sept. 16, the iconic ?60s series will return to syndication for the first time since 1990, but with a startling difference: All 79 episodes are being digitally remastered with computer-generated effects not possible when Gene Roddenberry created the show 40 years ago. The news could cause Roddenberry loyalists to have a collective cow, but the longtime Trek staffers in charge of the makeover say they're honoring the late maestro's vision, not changing it.

I wonder if they will have another go at releasing this 'new and improved' version of the 'classic series' on DVD.

I believe most people are of the opinion that their first attempt was pretty pathetic (e.g. naff packaging, poor quality episode prints, not much in the way of extras)

TOS - CGI makeover???

Postby Marcus Anton on Thu Sep 07, 2006 11:20 pm

Hmm, mixed feelings about this. Part of the joy of watching the old series are the original effects - which still mostly hold up well today. Just the inventiveness of the spfx technicians at that period of television history is what I always find "fascinating" - to coin one of Spock's frequent eyebrow raising remarks.

With the new series (Enterprise) having disappeared into the nebulous fog of tv history, it might be good to revisit the original series, with a new perspective that might help it to appeal to today's younger generation of viewers.

I'd much rather watch classic Trek episodes than a lot of the boring sci-fi garbage full of gel spiky-haired male teenagers and long blonde haired nail varnishing bimbo drama queens who populate most of tv made today.

(Ooops! Is that showing my age?)

Here here! Much rather see stuff from the 'good old days' than any of the shlock they're putting on the air now. It's not showing ones age at all to make such comments. I think it rather shows good taste.
