Favourite Episodes of Red Dwarf

Red Dwarf is the longest running BBC2 sit-com in the UK. The first episode was originally transmitted on the 15th February 1988. Since then, seven series have been made, totalling 44 episodes to date (1997). The show is set on a large ship (the "Red Dwarf") in space, three million years, give or take a day, from Earth. The whole of the crew has been wiped out, except for David Lister, now the last human alive; Arnold Rimmer, a hologrammatic simulation of a dead crew member; The Cat, a humanoid creature that evolved from Lister's pet cat; and, in the later series, Kryten, a service mechanoid.

Hello to everyone. I just found this site tonight and this is my first post on the forum Smile .

I am not particularly a fan of sci-fi but I watched all of the Red Dwarf right from the start. Personally i think that it found its feet during season one and seasons two to five were very strong. Season six i believe started to decline and i have to say that the rest did not care for too much, despite the charms of Chloe Annett Smile.

As i have recently started to purchase the series on DVD, and it has refreshed my mind, i thought that I'd try to pick my 5 favourite episodes. So difficult as it was here are my top 5 at this point in time -

Queeg (from season 2)

Marooned (from season 3)

Bodyswap (from season 3)

Dimension Jump (from season 4)

Quarantine (from season 5)

Season 3 is my favourite series with all six episodes being particularly strong.

I would be interested in hearing any other opinions.

Wow that's a really tough one to pick out individual favourites from each of the eight runs of this great comedy series! However potential winners are probably 'Gunmen of the Apocolypse', 'Back To Reality' and 'Backwards'. I'll have to give it some more thought before I arrive at my favourites from each run.

For me the most complete Season episode package is Season Five, somehow the following three runs were merely pale immitations by comparison.

Thanks anyway for a great thread idea!!

Overall the second series is my favourite. Both Statis Leak and especially Queeg were totally brilliant. The sixth series is probably the second best series for me. Lot's of people felt it got repetitive at that point but I loved the "space core directives" jokes.

As for the rest, from the first series I'd say "The End", the third series has to be backwards, the fourth is a deadheat between White Hole and Meltdown, the fifth has the wonderful Holoship ("Lister to Red Dwarf"). I also hated the final two series, they just weren't Red Dwarf.

I certainly agree with you regard Series Eight, I dragged my heels before eventually getting hold of a copy of the DVD release, partly because I found it at a very good price but partly because of the wealth of extras.

I personally find Series Seven less offensive but it is definitely a far cry from the 'glory days' of previous series. personally feel they really hit their mark with Series Five and everything after that was a pale imitiative shadow of past triumphs.
