the very first scenes in the very first episode of secret army were filmed at waternewton mill, near peterborough, cambridgeshire england.it was also used in episodes 31 "invasions" and 41 " bridgehead". it can also be seen in the second "dirty dozen" film called " the next mission" [ 1985 ] when lee marvin and his troops find an old open top car under a canvas in a barn. built in 1791 on the south bank of the river nene it was developed into five quality dwellings in 1991. if your ever traveling south on the a1 waternewton is situated between the villages of stibbington [ home of the nene valley railway ] and alwalton, take the first left into waternewton which is "old great north road " then the next left into " mill lane " follow it down to the river then you will see the mill on the left in all its glory. there is a lock behind the mill and this is a lovely place to have a picnic or a break from your journey.
