My favoriete is Nathalie Chantrans.A very brave heroic young girl,who was risking her own life to save a lot of RAF men.Going through the fire for her best friend Monique in the episode"Hostage"by getting her out of the hospital out of the hands of the gestapo!!!I was 18 years old when the serie started and I remember a lot of scenes.There was a scene in the third series with Nathalie and Monique comforting each other(I think it was in the episode"Collaborator")Why did they cut out this scene?Did some of you notice this too or am I the only one!!!!

Loved the Juliette Hammond intervieuw.It's a pity that the lighting was too dark.So you couldn't see the faces very well.Juliette still looks a lot like good old Nathalie Chantrens!!!She didn't aged.
Are thee any Nathalie fans in the house.

I thought all of the characters were very credible and well portrayed but the character of Natalie was my favourite too. I think at the time the series was shown it was unusual to see a woman in the thick of all the action. She was very cool under pressure and at the same time enigmatic - you never new very much about her. I liked the relationships that she had with Albert, Monique and Alain, especially in the third series.

You can get the books and the music on e-bay, although I found the books quite dull. They are really just a re-hash of the series and don't expand on the characters an awful lot.

This may sound daft but I actually like Major Brandt , I think considering the differences between Kessler and Brandt I know who I Would prefer to be captured by.

Although I think that Kessler is quite a swav and sophisticated in a brutish kind of way.

I absolutely agree with you she is certainly is probably the strongest character the series produced. Yes, I'd certainly consider myself a Mathalie fan! Certainly seems baffling that such a 'comforting' scene would have been considered worthy of cutting. Not to worry now that we can enjoy uncut quality prints of all episodes on DVD.

Juliette's interview was amongst an excellent selection of extras released on the third season box set, a superb package

Obviously, the username I use here gives away my favourite character. I think it's because when I first saw the series, I was young and foolish enough to believe that all Germans were evil during the war. Brandt was the first character I had seen who challenged that stereotype. Indeed, watching it again after all these years, I am amazed by the sympathy we are made to feel for Brandt, because of his "nice" methods of interrogation, so that when his life turns to mush during series two, it is his story that takes over the series at that point.
Interesting also that secret army came so long before all the fuss caused when the statue of "bomber" Harris was raised in London. The effects of what Kessler calls the "terror fliegers" are dwelt on at length during the three series.
Nevertheless, for credibility, entertainment, sympathy and because he is the perfect foil to Kessler, it has to be Michael Culver's Brandt as my favourite character.
Terence Hardiman does a fine job as his replacement in series three, but it would have been interesting to see how Michael Culver would have played series three. Or had he taken his character as far as it could go?

I have to agree with most of the posters on this thread, that Natalie (Juliet Hammond-Hill) is my fav part/actress, remembered also from Blakes7 episode Power as "Pele". It is difficult to plump for one, as all the cast (& crew) made a fantastic long term job of Secret Army - which ranks alongside Survivors, as the greatest drama the Beeb has ever produced. What a shame the BBC cannot create this standard these days, I would estimate the best current efforts at about 10% of these 1970s series.
I've just finished watching all 3 seasons, spread out over about 3 months + Andy's great interviews & yes, what is done - is done, but please DD, do stop the stupid way the darkened lighting & jumping from B&W to colour is done in future interviews, very off-putting & daffy when Andy has researched his questions so well. Just proper lighting, or better still natural light in a nearby park would be far better.
Remembering secret army, by Viktors Ritelis, was very interesting & answered many background questions.
All in all a great tribute to the bravery of so many Men & women who fought & sometimes lost their lives, in a bid to rid Europe of Hitler & his evil followers, I am humbled by it all.

I have no real favorite among the characters, I was only 4 when the serie first aired. I got to know the serie because the BRT , Belgische Radio en Televisie, started to air the serie again in 2004, for those who are interested, the BRT has restarted the serie Secret Army again since 24 march 2005 on their afternoon broadcasts. every day from monday thil friday. I have recently placed an order for the DVD box containing all 3 series of Secret Army and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

Being a Belgian myself with an interest in the Second World War, I have a relatively detailed knowledge about our Resistance past, this allows me to notice that the serie broadly based on the Belgian Resistance as a whole and the Evasion lines in particular is very accurate in depicting the true conditions.

the Actors and Actresses did a very good job !!

Favourite character? Toss a coin between Brandt and Monique.

Rather sitting on the fence over this?

It is indeed a pity major Brandt had to go but this is what War can do to people, it destroys them, such as in his case when his family was killed, and since the serie tried to be as realistic as possible, this was perhaps unavoidable.

Terence Hardiman's character however was a very good replacement though.
Do you have the entire DVD collection ? I got an E mail that my order is underway. I can't wait !!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed seeing the people from Secret Army days on the DVD production. When Andy sent me copy of the set I sat down with a bit of a sigh as it was all so long ago and probably not aged well... I was really surprised! I think the standard was very good. I actually enjoyed watching all the episodes again and think it is as good as many things to-day. Must say Juliette looked good still in the interviews and her contribution to the series was important. I liked working with her a lot and particularly enjoyed the train episode in which she featured. I think it was me she was referring to as being a bit unthoughtful with the more violent aspects of the role - frankly she acted 'strong - tough' so well I sometimes forgot it was in fact acting...

I am glad Michael Culver made such a good impression. I thought both he and Clifford made the Germans very human without denying some of the more unpleasant aspect of the Gestapo!

Feel very pleased the series is giving pleasure to people even to-day. I considered it one of the best series I worked on.
