2009 - Desktop calendars (some that I've made)

Postby Sarah Tarrant on Wed Dec 17, 2008 9:43 am

I was watching my ‘Very Best of’ DVD on Sunday (14th) evening when I got the idea for new computer desktop calendars. Basically it involved me attaching my Canon IXUS 801S digital camera to the top of my tripod and positioning said item squarely in front of my widescreen television. Then with the lights off, in total darkness (and there’s certainly plenty of that here in the UK at present) I patiently freeze frame advanced through various promos before I captured the images I thought I could best use. Fairly tricky as cameras naturally view the old cathode ray tube differently from our human eyes but generally I feel I’ve got a reasonable level of quality from the images I’ve captured.

The calendar dates themselves are always ‘a bit of a bugger’ to create and very time consuming to do however going into a Microsoft Word document and using WordArt I managed a reasonably good professional looking format which I then copied and pasted into a paint application. This was then saved as a jpeg for insertion into the final calendar design. I’ve always noticed that computer desktop calendars always stick to the bog standard 4x3 months configuration when they are used and thought I’d break with established convention. I’ve used both 6x2 line rectangle and a split two halves triangular formation in my calendars.

I’m using the old ‘Police call sign’ alphabet to differentiate each project and, as pointed out with the attempts I did last year I this time offer each in two dimensions.

Here then is Alpha09…

Next is Bravo09…

I reckon there are two or maybe three more I’d like to do, drawing on a collection of images from other promos that I have, and hope to get to do them some time over the next week or so…

Finally got back to having another look at this during Sunday afternoon although IMO it's tough trying to better my Alpha09 I've put together a couple more with a tad of minimalist to them I think/hope.

Here is 'Delta-09'...

Maybe a bit too much Ian and Adrian here but the stepped images in 'Echo-09' is to represent the six band members...

You can never have too much Human League...

There seemed like loads of images I wanted to use from 'Tell Me When' although the filmed quality of this promo IMO seemed a bit grainy despite the marvellous location filming but eventually only came away with two for this one...

Quite pleased with this one for 'One Man...', the backing is the drink being poured into a glass containing a slice of lemon although you can't see that due to the composite of three photos... Susan in the middle as it's primiarily her song...

A couple of images that I thought might be for background use seemed too good for that and have been used in a more prominent way in this one that I did this morning...

Using up some other images from 'Louise' the calendar have had to make way for 'the bus'...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/saraht1102/Kilo09-1680x1050.jpg

This next one and a promo that I've been meaning to do something with for some time. Really happy with this arrangement and used red in honour of the old designation used on early singles like 'Sound of the Crowd' and 'Love Action'...

There will be just two more of these and then I'm all done. Been collecting images this morning just before breakfast and getting a vague idea how I'll be using them.

then last three from me...

First up a couple around the same promo...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/saraht1102/Mike09-1680x1050.jpg

With the second one, using the same promo, I can see a slight connection with TV series 'Survivors' and possibly the general doom laden tone of early League song 'Circus of Death'...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/saraht1102/November09-1280x1024.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/saraht1102/November09-1680x1050.jpg

Finally this one which IMO has the best Oakey hairstyle...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/saraht1102/Oscar09-1280x1024.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/saraht1102/Oscar09-1680x1050.jpg

Of the others on the 'best of' DVD wasn't interested in doing a calendar around either 'Circus of Death' or 'Empire State Human', felt that 'Love Is All That Matters' is merely a clipfest of previous promos and have been unable, after a number of attempts to get any images from either 'Don't You Want Me' or 'The Lebanon'

Hope you guys have liked all these!!
