memories-tv - a new website source of rare TV shows

Postby Sarah Tarrant on Fri Jun 19, 2009 1:33 pm

It's been brought to my attention that a new website, known as 'memories-tv' is now operating and offering a similiar type of service as was previously found with 'raretelevision.com'

You check out their catalogue at the website... http://www.memories-tv.co.uk/index.htm

I note on my first visit that although their line up is fairly thin at present they do have 'Colditz' which is being offered for £17.99, a fantastic bargain!!!

Not sure about ordering from this site???

Well I recently 'took the plunge' and nabbed a copy of their 'Up Pompeii' television series title which I recieved earlier today.

It's a three disc set in a standard sized box (albeit with a fairly garish montage of various series title images cover) with a hinged multi disc holder similiar to which has recently featured in the 'Doctor Who - War Games' three disc set. The discs themselves come with the official 2|Entertain copyright notice, 2|Entertain and BBC official animated logos. At the main menu you have chapter and scene selection options and, amazingly you've even got subtitles!

This is a mighty impressive highly professional presentation of what I presume is a classic comedy series sourced from the recent BBC4 repeat transmissions. 'Up Pompeii' from Memories TV is definitely a title that seems flawless and impossible to fault and as a first dip into the catalogue of titles that this company (judging by the padded envelope are based up in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire) are offering up titles which easily match the output offered by official title retailers.

Highly recommended!

I went back onto the website today to order "Up Pompeii" only to find that it had disappeared. I sent them an Email and got a very quick reply saying that it had been removed as it wasn't a very good seller . But they still have it and i managed to order it okay. Not a good seller? Well they've sold at least two recently now

I've been back to look at their website and am delighted to see a combined Season 1&2 set of "A Very Peculiar Practice" http://www.tv-nostalgia.com/detailsaverypeculiarpractice.htm plus "A Very Polish Practice" http://www.tv-nostalgia.com/detailsaverypolishpractice1.htm

Definitely something I want to add to my DVD collection!!!

Today I received a copy of "A Very Polish Practice" and whilst picture and sound quality are far better than my original poor quality VHS tape there is no chapter pointing or subtitle option like which was offered with the previous title I purchased from 'memories-tv'. Upon loading you instantly have the static title shot from the opening credits plus an icon to press to start playing the main feature.

Still musn't grubble, at least this fine feature length title is now available on DVD. Hope to come back to 'memories-tv' to grab the combined Season 1/2 box set of 'A Very Perculiar Practice' later in the year. It certainly isn't going to be possible during March 2010 because of the special edition Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet delux album CDs and the three story classic series Doctor Who 'Myths and Legends' DVD box set.

Today I received through recorded delivery post the complete fourteen episode/two season (1986/1988) TV series of "A Very Peculiar Practice".

Now it got me wondering how they spread 14 episodes over six discs. Well it breaks down as...

Disc One - Season One (1 & 2)
Disc Two - Season One (3 & 4)
Disc Three - Season One (5, 6 & 7)

Disc Four - Season Two (1, 2 & 3)
Disc Five - Season Two (4 & 5)
Disc Six - Season Two (6 & 7)

These discs are served up in a typical multi-disc box, like we usually see for series sets from Network, complete with two pivoted double disc mounts inside.

The quality of material for the first three discs is fairly reasonable but there are no polished menu options on the discs which is surprising as I thought all of these episodes would have been sourced from the recent SkyArts1 transmission.

My attention is primarily focused on the Second Season, the main appeal for me to nab this title, and the picture quality is excellent. Unlike the first season these seven episodes benefit from chapters, professional menu titles and episode selection but not chapter selection options.

Of course I realise that its down probably to poor sales however I think it is very sad indeed that Network did not have the courage to either bring out the second season or offer all 14 episodes in an official multi disc release. I was amazed to see recently that someone is attempting to sell the Network Season One title through play.com for £72... are they crazy or what?

For offering the previously unreleased second season this title must be welcomed and I for one am impressed with it for that at least!

Watched one of the episodes from this, Season Two first offering "The New Frontier" on Disc Four and was mighty impressed with the fantastic picture quality and improved sound... far better than my creeky old but still playable VHS tape copy from its original transmission back in 1988.

I certainly feel much more optomistic about the couple of other titles I am considering which should be replacing 'Manhunt' as my 'new stuff Tuesday'/'second chance Sunday' series.

Was watching disc one of the "A Very Peculiar Practice" title and was surprised that the second episode (from the first season) has an additional 3 1/2 mins after the closing credits taken from the beginning of the episode. Very puzzling but don't mind as I love the series.

Picture and sound quality uniformly good on this title whichever of the six discs you look at
