Finally I can get back to this...
It might possibly seem a little self indulgent but considering the amount of time and effort I’ve put into locating, editing and creating the entire image capture project over the twenty-three episodes that make up the three seasons of “Wish Me Luck” I’ve decided reflect on all that I’ve accomplished and now attempt to pick out my top ten from each run.
With a total of two hundred and twenty-five image captures for Season One alone finding a top ten of my personal favourites was never going to be easy! However after patiently looking through them all I narrowed the field down to the most likely candidates although even then I still found a few that I simply couldn’t choose between.
1st – One – capture 15 (Liz and Matty meet in the park after interview with Faith Ashley)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-one-capture15.jpgDefinitely my favourite image capture of the first season because it features the two lead characters with such differing personalities, backgrounds and outlooks on life but united in the common cause of undercover work in occupied territory against the invading German aggressors.
2nd - Seven – capture 02 (The injured Matty arrives at German headquarters in the hands of plain clothes men)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-seven-capture02.jpgThe make up artist for this first season has definitely to be congratulated by so shockingly convincing the audience as to the brutal treatment that radio operator Matty has gained at the hands of the plain clothes German security operatives.
3rd - Eight – capture 13 (Blending into the café background Liz awaits the arrival of a prison cleaning woman)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-eight-capture13.jpgA look of cool self assurance across the features of Liz Grainger as she unobtrusively sits amongst other café regulars without any hint of attracting the unwelcome attention of the German soldiers behind her.
4th – Four – capture 24 (Matty attempts to persuade her landlady to transmit from the building)
Six – capture 16 (Matty cycling back to her apartment block)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-four-capture24.jpghttp://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-six-capture16.jpgReally tough to split these two so they share my fourth favourite image capture from season one. Both place Matty in a real life location setting which is appropriate to the story. In the former you can see her wireless case on the ground as she appeals for use of the washing line for her aerial whilst in the latter adequate daylight convinces the viewers of this authentic street setting which Matty is cycling down.
5th – Two – capture 10 (Matty’s transmitter ‘godmother’ Lois relaxes in the woods)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-two-capture10.jpgThe innocent rather naive quality of radio message transcriber/vicar’s daughter Lois is excellently conveyed in this memorable shot which finds the young woman relaxing with her silver flute in the tranquil setting of nearby woods.
6th – Three – capture 17 (Kit tells Liz the details of her courier work whilst washing outside the farmhouse)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-three-capture17.jpgNo top ten of this first season would be complete without a image capture featuring Liz and Kit and I chose this one primarily for the farmhouse location setting but also it emphasises the distinctly low tech feel of life in rural France.
7th – Five –capture 11 (a childhood photo of Claudine and Liz)
Six – capture 19 (A German soldier conveys an artists rendition of Matty)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-five-capture11.jpghttp://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-six-capture19.jpgPast and present likenesses of series characters is an important supporting aspect of this first season and tied for seventh place on my top ten are two excellent examples. In the first this framed photo rests by the bedside of Claudine’s guest bedroom where she uses the picture to support her point of view in a conversation she and Liz are having. With Matty, by this point in this first season run, formally identified as the radio operator they are seeking I thought this second image was an amazingly realistic sketch of the series lead character.
8th – Three – capture 12 (Matty’s identity card)
Three – capture 20 (Liz’s identity card)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-three-capture12.jpghttp://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-three-capture20.jpgAny wartime drama series runs the possibility of being tripped up if period specific identity cards are not genuine to the period however looking at this pair of images sharing my eighth favourite in top ten I reckon ‘Wish Me Luck’ would convince the more dedicated historian.
9th – Seven – capture 04 (The imposing grand German headquarters building)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-seven-capture04.jpgA suitably impressive location is used for the occupying forces and for clarity and perspective I’m rather proud of this shot.
10th – Two – capture 12 (Liz on a training exercise in a Wiltshire village)
http://gi103.photobucket.com/groups/m131/HBFSL16CJD/WML1-two-capture12.jpgAlthough predominately concerned with the central plot taking place in rural France I like this street scene with the horse drawn milk cart further supporting the period specific nature of the series.
At some point in the future I hope to come back with my personal favourites for Seasons Two and Three although I suspect, particularly the latter, will be much harder to choose!
