BAFTA award winning 1976 BBC costume drama. I Claudius tells the Emperor Claudius? epic story spanning the annals of Roman history, from the mighty Augustus, through to the madness of Caligula, as it echoes down through the centuries?

For me a defining moment in the entire series happens in the fifth episode ?Queen of Heaven?. In the scene towards the end of this instalment we find Antonia (Claudius mother whom lacks tolerance in her son), Herod (a distinguished looking handsome figure), Pisa (Claudius sister) and Claudius relaxing late in the evening. Whilst Antonia and Pisa are quick to denigrate Claudius for his foolishness primarily, at this point, in dealing with Sejanus it is Herod who sees the true cunning of Claudius beneath his simple outward persona. He says ?Claudius sways and bends with each little wind that blows? to which Pisa quickly replies ?which means he?s weak and cowardly?. Herod retorts with ?Perhaps. But at least he?s still here!? As this conversation is going on viewers can see in Claudius features the intellect that this character has below his foolish exterior.

Anyone got any other highlights of this series?

Scenes that make me laugh unexpectedly are always fun. One such scene was Claudius in the library with the old historian, who whispers to him about a relative being poisoned, and Claudius yells out really loud: "P-p-p-p-p-p-POISONED!!??!!!!!" "Ssshhhhh!" And they both look around to see if anybody heard. My husband and I nearly fell off the couch laughing at the scene. A similar effect occurred when Claudius whispered something to Caligula about Tiberius being at Capri and Caligula mockingly responded: "C-c-c-c-CAP-ri?!?!?"

And who can forget Caligula having Claudius rousted from his bed in the middle of the night to witness his special dance? My husband and I were in hysterics.

There is a scene early in the seventh episode ?Reign of Terror? between Tiberius and Agrippina that clearly indicates the working relationship that Sejanus has with Tiberius. In the enjoyable sequence between these characters Agrippina conjects that Sejanus is ?that black spider that sits on your shoulder spitting his poison in your ear?. A memorable metaphor indeed!
