I, Claudius - A Look Back

BAFTA award winning 1976 BBC costume drama. I Claudius tells the Emperor Claudius? epic story spanning the annals of Roman history, from the mighty Augustus, through to the madness of Caligula, as it echoes down through the centuries?

In America, the HBO/BBC co-production "Rome" debuts today, billed as the new "I Claudius". Graham Nelson looks back at the 1976 original, one of the all-time classics of British television, and asks: where did it all go right?

Thanks, Chris! That was a fabulous article by Graham Nelson, and very witty, viz:
<!--QuoteBegin--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Robert Graves (1895-1985) has the rare distinction of achieving classic status in every form of writing except, perhaps, cookery. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
and
<!--QuoteBegin--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Film of Phillips and Jacobi accepting BAFTA awards is more interesting than one might have guessed: if only for showing that while the cast looked beautiful in togas and Roman hairdressing, they sure were gruesome in the real-life 1970s. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm not sure whether the first documentary he mentions is on the U.S. DVD release, but I'll be checking tonight!

Just had a look at the HBO site you mentioned and certainly the 'Rome' series looks appealing.

Possibly it will come to either FX (famed for JAG, NCIS and the stunning Carnivale) or possibly the Hallmark Channel (home of Crossing Jordan and The District) early next year. Worth keeping an eye on these channels and they future plans.

Recently heard, as I'm sure many others have, that this series is set to debut on BBC2 during November in a 9.00pm weekday slot.

I wonder if 'I, Claudius' may get another airing at the same time.

Wouldn't it be great??? <!--emo&:huh:--><!--endemo-->
