is reality tv killing tv drama?

with the new series of I am Celebrity Get me Out of Here due to start in a few days now is
the time to have a thoughtful debate on the issue of reality TV.
The growing success of such shows like ICGMOOH concerns me because it seems that the
advertisers are demanding higher rating shows like ICGMOOH in which they can sell more
advertising space rather than high quality drama which does not always get the viewing
figures in which to attract greater advertising revenue.ITV and Channel 4 seem to be the
biggest exponents of reality TV which in reality is cheaper to produce than TV drama.
another worrying aspect of reality TV is how far the producers can push the boundary of
public taste and decency in this country and get away with no more than a slap on the
wrist from the tv regulators.
In the longer term, i fear if the success of such shows continues to grow, then i fear that tv drama will eventually disappear from mainstream tv channels like ITV and Channel 4 within 10 to 15 years

In a word to answer your question - Yes.

There are certain programmes that i put in the same bracket. I'm not sure that they are all classified as reality TV but i really struggle to watch them and i categorise them as junk. I'm a celebrity Get me out of here and Big Brother are the worst examples. I have watched both and cannot understand for the life of me how people can actually keep viewing them. Watching people that are certainly not entertainers do more or less nothing sends me to sleep. Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor are right up there too. I don't think that i'd mind these so much if it wasn't for the egocentric judges who appear to want the limelight more than the competitors.

I don't think that it is the quality of the future of TV that we have to worry about, its the present.

I'm glad that i grew up in the seventies. I'm not stupid enough to believe that it was all great back then, but at least drama, comedy and variety were given a chance.
