What are you currently watching? - classic TV

Correspondingly I was wondering what series are you currently watching or re-watching on DVD or video at the moment?

Personally I prefer a routine of watching new stuff on a Tuesday evening and returning series on a Thursday. Casting my mind back four weeks ago I was polishing off ‘Colditz’ alongside the epic classic series Doctor Who story “The War Games”. Three weeks back it was the turn of ‘Spender’ with my watching the season three finale plus the feature length movie. For the past couple of Tuesdays I went totally retro and dipped into the thirteen part 1936 adventure serial “Space Soldiers”, the two discs being part of the pleasing seven disc ‘Flash Gordon’ DVD box set. I haven’t see it in years and was pleasantly surprised how excitingly enjoyable this comic book fantasy serial was. I look forward to returning to see more from this box set in the future however for August I want to have a look through the two disc “Knights of God” series which was the final title that I nabbed from raretelevision before they sadly ceased trading. Apart from ”Flash Gordon” I’ve recently also bought the three disc “The Ghosts of Motley Hall” for viewing at some point.

For Thursday’s as you’ll be aware from my image captures I’ve recently paid an extremely enjoyable return visit to the entire run of “Wish Me Luck”. As usual I find this a deeply moving and emotional experience and when the series came to an end I felt I needed a couple of weeks of relatively undemanding Thursday viewing and took in a couple of season two 'Airwolf' triple episodes. However for August it’s now double episodes of third season ‘Secret Army’ for me with Andy Priestner’s marvellously incisive and well researched book close at hand!

I would like to add that I acknowledge the recent release of 'Manhunt', a Network title that, for me, is a little bit tempting but at present I can't see any good price reductions. Also I'm a little wary as my recent official release WW2 drama series purchasing of 'Enemy At The Door' and 'Danger UXB' has left me a little bit cautious about getting another wartime drama series. Obviously as it is held in such high regard 'Colditz' was a exception to this.

You know how it is when you buy one title from a company and you go their mailing list. Such is the case for me with Simply Home Entertainment who claim to be the UK's leading independent mail order specialists for all good nostalgia, heritage and special interest DVDs. My first order was the three film/disc "All At Sea' movie collection featuring classic blakc and white British comedies 'Carry On Admiral', 'Up The Creek' and 'Further Up The Creek'. I've recently nabbed another title, one that I thought had been deleted, that being the 2005 "The Quatermass Experiment"

I've got their DVD mail Order Catalogue by my keyboard as I type this and there are certainly plenty of intriguing titles within its pages. I think, on this forum, there has been talk of 'Pathfinders' and Simply Home Entertainment have a good deal for this 3 DVD set plus the 2 disc 'Piece of Cake' in a special 'The R.A.F. At War' package.

However for me the most mouthwateringly intriging concerns a 1972 BBC series that ran over two years and is presented on five discs, something I am extremely tempted to buy... but I've got a lot of other things to watch in the meantime!

After thumbing my way through 'Knights of God' this month I've moved on to having a mixture of classic Flash Gordon (http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/2561632/Flash-Gordon-The-Complete-Series/Product.html) and 'The Slaves of Jedikah' and 'The Medusa Strain', a couple of first season "The Tomorrow People" stories.

October I'll be turning my attention to having a look at my intriguing 1972/3 BBC drama series which I'll probably come back and talk about shortly after...

New stuff for me at present for Tuesdays and (second chance) Sundays is the 'House of Cards' trilogy boxset... http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-Cards-Trilogy-DVD/dp/B0001Y9YEI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324030030&sr=8-1

I've now seen a third of this, the first serial under the 'House of Cards' title, thought the first and second episodes were great, less enthusiastic about episode three and it somewhat redeemed itself in the fourth and final part. Quite a shocking ending of this award winning 1990s series from the BBC.

Thursdays I've returned to have a weekly double dip into Seasons One and Two of 'Wings'

Got another new series to watch and have my eyes on a couple of other box set titles that I might buy at some point in the near future.

This week moved on from the 'House of Cards' trilogy box set and have started a gradual weekly stroll through the contents of the five disc box set of 'Dick Turpin' starring Richard O'Sullivan as the highwayman. Wasn't too sure about only being such short episodes (around 24 mins each) but the costumes, sets and locations look very good. Liked Richard's swordplay and horseriding skills and noted the appearance of Don Henderson in the third episode.

Hi Sarah...Long time no speak!! Hope all's well :-)
I'm currently watching the 1971 re-runs of "The Liver Birds" on GOLD. Absolutely love Polly James. Hopefully they'll show it until the end of the 1974 run when Polly left.
